Heated debate over ‘sanctions’ at Diamond Conference

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Mines, Obert Mpofu

Officials from Zimbabwe’s Mines Ministry and many of the invited guests to the Diamond Conference at Victoria Falls, used the second day on Tuesday to focus on the issue of what they called ‘Western sanctions’ and to attack American officials, who they accused of hindering the country’s diamond trade.

The Mugabe regime claims Zimbabwe’s diamond industry is being hindered by sanctions. In fact these are targeted sanctions which are mainly an asset freeze and travel ban on key members of the regime. Two diamond companies affiliated with the security sector chefs are on the list, because of the human rights abuses that occurred in the diamond mining areas.

Mines Minister Obert Mpofu who hosted the two-day conference, invited individuals and political figures who support ZANU PF, in an attempt to gain credibility for Zimbabwe’s tainted diamond trade.

One of the unfortunate targets was the American Gillian Milovanovic, who currently chairs the Kimberly Process (KP), a global watchdog set up to eliminate the trade in so-called blood diamonds.

Milovanovic was challenged to recuse herself by Abbey Chikane, a KP monitor for South Africa accused of supporting ZANU PF. Chikane claimed there was a conflict of interest because US ‘sanctions’ imposed on Zim are hurting the diamond trade. Chikane himself is a controversial figure who fell out with civil society groups in Zimbabwe.

Milovanovic argued that the sanctions are a bilateral issue that has nothing to do with diamonds. She is quoted as saying: “Compliance with the KP certificate is unrelated to the issue of sanctions.”

Mike Davis, a campaigner for Global Witness, dismissed Chikane’s role as an accuser, saying he is behaving in a hypocritical manner because he is a compromised figure himself who previously betrayed the trust of leading civil society activists in Zimbabwe.

“He even went to the extent of an unauthorized mission to Zimbabwe in November 2010, to authorize thousands of diamonds for sale on behalf of the KP, which he had no mandate to do,” Davis told SW Radio Africa.

Mines Minister Obert Mpofu also unleashed a public attack on Milovanovic, saying most of the Indian and Arab traders and investors at the conference were “scared” of her.

Mpofu said: “They are coming to me whispering, scared that they will be heard by the Americans who will interfere with their accounts”.

According to reports, other delegates from India, Israel and Dubai told Milovanovic that the KP is creating conditions for the illicit trade in Zimbabwe diamonds, by maintaining sanctions against the country. Milovanovic refused to be drawn into the argument.

Davis explained that there is a clear threat posed in the way that diamonds are being controlled by elements of the security apparatus. With an election due next year the concern is that the diamonds will be used to fund violence that will assist the Mugabe regime to retain power.

Obert Mpofu is the main thief in looting Zimbabwe diamonds. He will play to the tune of his music one day. Look at his belly, full of money from the looted diamonds.

Sanctions and drought are the two major scape goats this regime can spin in whenever they are confronted by adversity, yet deep down and under they are the very culprits who continue to propel policies that are contrary to the ideal objectives of this noble nation. Let it be known that these can be managed but we don’t have dedicated leaders with the nations concerns at heart, all what we have in every sphere of this leadership (if they deserve to be called leaders) is a clique of the political elite bend on lining their pockets and make their own beds more comfortable. What can Obert Mpofu soberly say to this nation that is not meant to cover up his looting spree and ensure the status quo prevails forever and ever let alone his guts to invite Thabo Mbeki to consolidate that??

Corruption is a cancer we all hate. Everyone dreams of a day when every Zimbabwean will benefit from the proceeds of our minerals, not only from the diamond trade but right across all the minerals we are endowed by Almighty God. However, the conference in question above was not about this important subject, which we can discuss in detail if it is raised by SW Radio Africa at a future date. Today we are talking about unjustified economic sanctions against the country and in particular the diamond trade. In my opinion, this is where we should direct our energies in our debate. I have a feeling that Zimbabwe is being punished by the big powers for the stance it took in resettling the landless people when it took some of the land from the white commercial farmers. I also have a feeling the country is being punished for having trade links with the Republic of China when the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and others in the west should have been the natural allies for Zimbabwe when one considers our political history. It is not about Thabo Mbeki but all about the West that wants a big share of the diamond trade in Zimbabwe and their off-springs who have been dispossessed of all the land they had. The involvement of China in the economic restructuring of Zimbabwe is also a thorn in the flesh of most West European countries and as far as they are concerned if they if they can not have it, nobody else should have it. It sound like ‘sour grapes’ that Zimbabwe is not toeing the line set by the West and has to be punished. That is all there is to it, mate.

Sir, I do believe you are a very confused person, who may be needs to attend a special clinic! What are you infact trying to say? First you say that corruption is a bad thing, that is correct! Then you say that we all want to see the benefit of the diamond industry, Very good! And you give God the praise for this national endowment that is being raped by the greedy pigs that have no consideration for the people of this magnificent country of Zimbabwe and are taking everything and leaving us nothing, and these are known as ZANUPF politicians or “cheffs”. And then you say thatthe “unjutified” economic sanctions against the “country!” in paticular the diamond trade!!! For goodness sake man, the sanctions are hell bent on stopping your pals from stealing us dead, the sanctions are not against Zimbabwe diamonds, they are against Mpofu’s diamonds and Mugabe’s diamonds and every other crooked MP or chefff that is involved in this anarchy. Sir it is better for you to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt!!

The Chinese are in here sucking the very life blood out of us as everyone thinks it is “OK”, they do not realise what leaches these people are, and by the time you wake up and find your coffee cold because you overslept ,these little split eyed people are going to own you, and if I were to come to you for a political history lesson I reckon I would just as well flush the toilet…Oh by the way the clinic is called Ingutsheni, in Bulawayo and they cater for your type and I booked a spot for you. Bye. God Bless Zimbabwe

Oh gosh, or not Ahh what a f…ng idiot who spew nonsense. I will not be diverted to talk anything else apart from the above topic. Whether you like it or not, the Chinese are there to stay for a very long time to come. They are our true friends who helped us to fight foreign occupation and domination. They can not be that bad today, mate. Actually, I am yawning and want to sleep as I compile this article so bye for now.

How do you regard Zimbabwe despite your deserting it in its hour of need? You keep on reminding everybody that you liberated the country but Mugabe is looting its assets and the Chinese are helping him.

Can you not see what is happening to the country you fought for its liberation? Is this looting of national resources what you were fighting for? Even though you unceremoniously ran away from it, are you satisfied with what is happening to its assets?
