Gideon Gono and Munyaradzi Kereke. Mere mention of these two names in Zimbabwe stirs up heated debate over their feud.

Is their fight really just over factionalism in the ruling ZANU PF party? Or did a shared history of animosity between the wealthy businessmen and their camps trigger it?

Observers agree the real turning point in the feud, according to accounts given by friends and colleagues of the two protagonists, was after their fallout at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ).

Since the two fell out in January 2012, when Gono reportedly fired Kereke from the central bank, the pair has been trading barbs and throwing accusations at each other. Soon after Kereke left the RBZ he launched a fierce verbal assault on Gono, claiming that he did the academic work for his ex-boss’s doctoral degree.

He then made sensational claims that Gono looted over $37,5 million and gold from the RBZ, at a time when Zimbabweans were wallowing in poverty. In late 2012 Gono hit back at Kereke and filed a $25 million lawsuit for defamation.

After that things went cold, until Kereke reignited the feud in November last year when he approached the Constitutional Court demanding to know why the courts were not prosecuting Gono on corruption allegations.

This time Gono came out guns blazing, lobbing verbal grenades at Kereke and accusing his nemesis of suffering from ‘legitimate psychological and psychotic issues’ that required expert medical assistance.

Gono also reminded Kereke that he was no angel himself, an implicit reference to allegations Kereke is facing of raping a minor and being shielded from prosecution because he’s well-connected in police and judiciary circles.

Harare based journalist and analyst Itai Dzamara, who has been closely following the case said one thing which is clear from the expose is that Kereke’s allegations cannot be taken lightly.

“I think Kereke’s allegations cannot be dismissed cheaply as people might think its sour grapes because Gono fired him the RBZ. These two worked together for over ten years and had a close working relationship. Each would have knowledge of what the other did, even deep secrets.”

“I believe Kereke cannot just wake up in the morning and accuse Gono of wrongdoing without the hard facts. This will be an accusation that a court of law can be able to deal with,” Dzamara said.

Whilst these two men continue to fight there a lot more other in Zimbabwe who are worried sick. These two men were the bankers who witnessed first hand the looting by all big fish in Zimbabwe. What worries the big fish is which ever of the two, Gono or Kereke goes downs, he will want to take many a big-fish down with him! But it is to be expected of a big corrupt monstrosity such as Zanu PF; it was like a two story building of mud-brick it does not have the structural integrity to last!

    • Chimbwido Warvet says:

You are simply an idiot and fool who does not know who to blame for the collapse for the main financial institution in Zimbabwe. These two men are victims who were caught in the spiral webs of the collapse of the major financial institutions of the world. Major banks of the world were skimmed of their funds by senior bankers that brought about the paralysis of the financial institutions and the eventual collapse of the global economy. Today the entire world is experiencing an economic recession. Gono and Kereke were not involved in the collapse of these financial institutions.

To compound our economic difficulties further, Gono and Kareke followed the wicked, criminal and corrupt prescriptions given to Zimbabwe to follow by the so-called world bank and the IMF – the so-called ”Structural Adjustment Programme.” The country was fooled by the world bank and IMF to believe that there was going to be an economic growth that would ease employment opportunities in the country. As you may be aware, Zimbabwe had to stop implementing the IMF and World Bank economic model after many years of failure by following its disastrous economic policies. And in the process, Zimbabwe had accumulated huge debts to these institutions it is still paying to this day. Gono and Kereke are not responsible for these failures but the IMF and the so-called World Bank whose economic model was a complete disaster to our economy. Your criticisms of these two men is unjustified and is contributed by your ignorance of the issues at stake.

No developing country’s banking system were affected by the 2008 banking crisis; none that is except Zimbabwe’s banking system, according to you Chimbwido! You really say some nonsensical things.

        • Chimbwido Warvet says:

That is why you are in the same league with Yepec. You two guys are damn fools if you do not know that the entire world is suffering from the effects of the banking crisis of 2008. I am not going to continue feeding you with information for nothing. Do your own research and find out for yourself.

      • Yepec says:

The main contradiction of the day by fake, Chimbwido Warvet, is that “The country was fooled by the bank and IMF to believe that there was going to be economic growth that would easy employment opportunities in the country”. Easy employment opportunities, really?

Can the gist of his writing surprise the readers of its meanings? Zanu PF, is this not the Party which had to resort to rigging of the 31 July 2013 elections? What more can one say about this pathological lair and the Party or its so called government? If one does not believe that fake, Chimbwido Warvet, is a pathological liar, just reread his comments and see what they mean.

His, final contribution to the contradiction is, “Your criticisms of these two men is unjustified and is contributed by your ignorance of the issues at stake”. There you are, about this mercenary and what comes out of his mouth, also, the Chief, Zanu PF, Government Consultants. See how he attributes to others his own ignorance of issues at stake.
