Monday, 13 February 2012

The MDC joins President Michael Sata, the people of Zambia, SADC community and the rest of Africa in celebrating the clinching of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy by the Zambian national soccer team on Sunday.

The MDC also congratulates the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for hosting a successful AFCON soccer tournament.

The MDC joins the people of Zambia and the rest of Africa in celebrating the unity and the positive spirit imbued by this tournament.

The win by the team, affectionately known as Chipolopolo on Sunday, was Zambia’s first. Therefore, the SADC community and the African continent feel proud that their brothers and sisters in Zambia have won such a prestigious tournament.

Zambia and SADC stand tall with the rest of the continent after emerging as the Kings of Africa at an event that drew hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world.
The AFCON tournament showcased Africa as a united continent that is able to break geographical, political, social, religious and racial barriers thereby, making the event a truly African experience.

The MDC hopes that after this successful event, Africa will remain united and will be able to tackle wars, diseases and internecine political conflicts that have for decades ravaged our great continent,” Hon. Mwonzora says, adding that the people of Africa deserve a return to normal and quiet lives.

The African drum beat of success must sound louder and the flame of victory must glow. We are a continent of positives and with unity of purpose, Africa can compete with the rest of the world. It is only possible if we unite, not as followers but as leaders. All African nations must stand together, united and ready for real change.

Africans can best learn from the just-ended tournament that true unity is possible as evidenced by the way countries rallied behind African teams.

The people’s struggle for real change – Lets finish it!!!
