Winston Changara, formerly Robert Mugabe’s number one bodyguard, is certainly playing with fire. According to news website Zimonline, Changara told a police internal investigation team probing his demotion, that Mugabe’s wife Grace lied about him so he would be fired and block the exposure of her alleged extra marital affairs.

A bizarre slanging match has developed in which Mugabe’s wife accused the former head of the Close Protection Unit of making advances towards her, followed by charges of indecent assault. Zimonline says Changara told a committee of senior police officers that trouble started when he threatened to tell Mugabe about the affairs his wife was having.

He was however demoted from his rank of Assistant Commissioner and thrown into the embarrassing police commissioner’s pool following the indecent assault accusation made by Grace. The website further states the alleged affairs involve the first lady, an exiled Zimbabwean businessman and a serving government Minister.

Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri is said to have been alerted to the serious allegations made and has already indicated he will intervene to stop the issue getting out of hand. It’s thought Changara might be re-deployed to a provincial post within the police force as a compromise so as to take him far away from the Mugabes in Harare.
