MDC delegation briefs activists in diaspora on way forward

The MDC will soon put in place mechanisms to stop people from abusing MDC cards in the diaspora, national party chairman Isaac Matongo said Sunday.

Briefing over 300 activists at a district meeting in Birmingham after being told that some people were selling party cards for £100, Matongo said plans are at an advanced stage to change the design of the card, which he said would also help differentiate their party from the other MDC faction.

Matongo described the culprits as ‘people belonging to the other party,’ without elaborating. ‘We are ready to take the bull by the horns as a united people’ he said referring to the current MDC split. ‘Their abuse of our party cards is now coming to an end.’
He added, ‘When you see the enemy newspapers, like the Herald devoting positive coverage to you, then you know you have sold out.’ He was referring to MDC members who have been reported by the Herald saying he and his delegation were not welcome in the UK.

Youth chairman Nelson Chamisa addressed the gathering where he said reforms in the party were gathering pace, with an all stake-holder meeting planned for the end of February, which will bring together students, farmers, church members and workers.

Explaining the deportation of MDC leaders from Zambia, Chamisa said the delegation had very productive meetings in that country, before the Zimbabwean intelligence managed to track them down and get the Zambian military to take action against them.

Chamisa also said President Tsvangirai had communicated his displeasure with the ill-treatment to the Zambian President, Levy Mwanawasa.
