Senate elections

The state controlled Herald reported on Wednesday that MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai is interested in running for Senate. Spokesman for the MDC leader, William Bango has however denied these reports.

The chairman of the MDC London branch, Ephraim Tapa said it was the usual Herald spin towards any election that they would try to entice the MDC into participating. He said without the MDC taking part, the Senate elections will not receive any political recognition outside Zimbabwe.

Tapa blasted the state propaganda machinery for trying to confuse the electorate by suggesting that there was fierce lobbying within the MDC for the party to contest the Senate polls. He pointed out that the MDC leader was not power hungry like his foes from Zanu (PF) who jump to take up any rewarding posts without considering the financial implications of their actions.

The Senate, believed to have been re-created to appease most Zanu (PF) heavyweights who lost in the Parliamentary elections, was abolished in 1987.
