The MDC, still suffering from the senate election fiasco, is moving fast to reinvigorate its party structures starting this weekend with provincial congresses for Harare and Chitungwiza provinces. William Bango spokesman for party President Morgan Tsvangirai announced in a statement that the MDC’s Congress process has advanced tremendously. ‘Harare and Chitungwiza provinces shall have their provincial congresses this coming weekend, followed by Masvingo, Mashonaland East, Central and West, Midlands South, Midlands North and Manicaland,’ said Bango. He said the provincial congresses are expected to end at the month-end. Thereafter, he added, a notice for the main congress shall be published, preparing for a smooth renewal process of the party in February. Bango said the congress process arose from a resolution of the national council meeting on the 29 th of May 2005. Secretary General Welshman Ncube, pursuant to the resolution issued a circular to all provinces on the 2 nd of June outlining the road map to this congress ‘That road map required branches to have finished their congresses by June 30; wards by August 31; districts by October 30 and provinces by December 31. In addition, proposals for constitutional amendments were to be submitted to the legal committee by September 30,’ he said. A constitutional mandatory notice of two months for the convening of a National congress shall be issued by the national council after all the provinces have completed their congresses at the end of December.
