More
city centre buildings targeted

Hot on the heels of speculation that operation Murambatsvina had
been concluded, government henchman Leslie Gwindi says more buildings
in Harare's city centre will be closed down. It became apparent
his statement was a belated announcement as last week on Friday
more buildings were shut down in the city centre. Several offices
simply shut their doors in order to prevent police gaining entrance.
Those who opened for business ended up with their office furniture
outside.
Most tenants are complaining that the police are harassing them
instead of resolving outstanding issues with the landlords. Rentals
are paid in advance and it is proving difficult for most tenants
to get their money back after being evicted by police. Gwindi, speaking
for the unelected commission running Harare, says they have compiled
a comprehensive list of all those who had not complied with their
directives and would shut down more buildings in the coming days.
Our correspondent Simon Muchemwa reports that several inspection
teams could be seen moving office to office in Harare and that several
businesses are struggling under the weight of uncertainty.
