Dutch ING bank sues Zimbabwe government
over debt

Government financial indiscipline has finally caught
up with them. The Netherlands Bank, ING has filed a law suit over
the 32 million euros it is owed by the Zimbabwe government. The
law suit was filed in the Supreme Court of Bermuda after government
defaulted on loan repayments. The money was borrowed via the Ministry
of Finance in 1994 and used to finance the digitalisation exercise
by the Post and Telecommunications Corporation. The installation
was carried out by telecommunications firm Intelsat.
Zimbabwe Independent journalist, Godfrey Maravanyika
says government has no foreign currency to keep up with the loan
repayments and so they have defaulted on payments. Legal experts
from the Dutch Bank warned that government risked having its property
in Europe attached if it did not pay up. At risk is the Zimbabwean
Embassy in London, vehicles belonging to diplomats and even Air
Zimbabwe planes making trips into Europe. The bank could seek an
order asking for these assets to be seized and auctioned off.
