The Movement for Democratic Change’s (MDC) Harare province on Saturday unanimously recommended that the party draw up a new constitution that will not be abused to suit the needs of a selected few.
Morgan Femai, who was re-elected the provincial chairman unopposed at their Saturday congress in Harare said a new constitution for the party must clearly spell out the duties of officials elected to the hierarchy of the party.
‘The senate fiasco exposed the weaknesses of the party’s constitution. At the height of the crisis, even junior members of the party were making policy statements to the media. In the end we ended up having contrasting views, people from the same party,’ he said.
In a way, said Femai, the senate fiasco exposed the loopholes in the constitution that some individuals allegedly wanted to use to gain control of the party unconstitutionally.
During the congress, Hatfield legislator Tapiwa Mashakada was elected the vice-chairman, while Glen View councillor Last Maengahama becomes the secretary.
