MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai met United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Ghana on Monday. The meeting between the two took place on the sidelines of a UN conference on trade and development. The meeting lasted 30 minutes and it’s reported Tsvangirai used the opportunity to brief the UN chief on developments in Zimbabwe after the March 29 elections. The opposition has been on a major diplomatic offensive in the African region with Tsvangirai declaring they want, ‘to cut Mugabe’s umbilical cord with Africa.’

Last week a UN Security Council meeting chaired by South Africa saw British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Ban Ki-moon crank up the pressure on Mugabe. Ban kept up the pressure on Saturday when he arrived in Ghana, pledging to discuss Zimbabwe with other African leaders at the conference between April 20-25. Meanwhile MDC Secretary General Tendai Biti held consultative talks with Kenya’s new Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Biti said they were seeking Odinga's advice on how to deal with the deepening crisis in Zimbabwe.
