Tension in Bulawayo as army trucks and water cannons patrol streets

Residents in several suburbs in the city of Bulawayo report that the atmosphere is tense after 4 military trucks full of armed soldiers and water cannons patrolled the streets on Thursday.

Our Bulawayo correspondent Zenzele said this convoy drove slowly thorough the western suburbs, including areas in Pelandaba, Njube and Mupopoma.

This was just a day after 2 air-force helicopters continuously flew low over the same areas. Zenzele said military uniforms are always reminiscent of the Gukurahundi atrocities of the mid-eighties and this is clearly an attempt by the ruling party to intimidate people ahead of the elections this weekend.
