Concern over ZEC’s delay to announce poll results

The Zimbabwe Election Commission has yet to announce results despite some polling stations posting their results outside, six hours after voting ended on Saturday.

Our Harare correspondent Tagu Mukwenyana said early results from polling stations countrywide started trickling in as early as 2am. Early poll results show the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai ahead in rural strongholds of the ruling party.

ZEC officials have remained tight lipped, although there was a brief appearance on national television by an official to denounce the MDC for claiming an early victory. The MDC has told us the police were hunting for Tendai Biti, who is reported to have gone underground.

‘Its clear from the results the MDC is headed for a landslide. Most results so far show the MDC leading in all Zanu-PF strongholds and it would be a miracle for Robert Mugabe to bounce back. Mugabe has lost in his rural home of Zvimba, so it shows you how much Zimbabweans wanted him out,’ Mukwenyana said.
