The Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) invites you to a Public meeting to discuss the issue of continuous suspension of elected Councilors within local authorities. The meeting is expected to start at 17:30hrs ending at 2000hrs at the New Ambassador hotel.
The topic of this meeting (Suspension and dismissal of elected Councilors: is it justified or a threat to Democratic Local Governance) is premised on the suspensions that have befallen quite a number of elected councilors with some being fired. CHRA seeks to create a platform where policy makers can interact with residents and answer questions on how this scenario has impacted social service delivery. Residents have also pilled a lot of questions, some of which as an Association we can not answer, for instance, “How does a Councilor leading a land audit report gets the chop, from the person implicated by the audit result, especially after the issue has not been concluded?” It is also appalling to realize that most of the Councilors affected by this are from MDC T, which then raises a question on whether the move is political or Developmental. To this end, CHRA has invited leading expects in the field of Good Local Governance to try and give their independent analysis of these issues.
CHRA has invited the Deputy Minister of Local Government Rural and Urban Development, Hon Sessel Zvidzai, Local Government analyst and University of Zimbabwe Lecturer Professor John Makumbe, Mr. DURI from Urban Councils Association of Zimbabwe and Hon P Karenye, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio on Local Government to give their detailed position on this matter.
