The MDC Today - Issue 217

Wednesday, 13 July 2011

High Court Judge, Justice Chinembiri Bhunu today reserved judgment in an application by MDC Secretary-General and Finance Minister, Hon. Tendai Biti in which he is interdicting the police from accessing information from his mobile phone lines.

Last week, Hon. Biti filed an urgent chamber application interdicting the police from accessing information from his cellphones as it was a form of harassment. This was after a Harare provincial magistrate; Mishrod Guvamombe had issued the police a warrant of seizure.

There have been several attempts on Hon. Biti’s life this year with Zanu PF thugs attacking his government offices twice and unknown assailants bombing his Harare home.

Meanwhile, Councillor Willard Moyo of Ward 25, Silobela, Midlands North province was on Tuesday granted a US$100 bail by a Kwekwe magistrate on allegations that he had insulted a Zanu PF supporter, Deliwe Muchato. He was arrested on Monday in Silobela and detained for a day at Kwekwe Central Police Station.

Councillor Moyo defeated Muchato in the council elections in 2008.

Another MDC councillor, Richard Magunda of Ward 18 in Makonde, Mashonaland West province has been receiving threats from the officer in charge of Kenzamba Police Station, Inspector Mungate.

On 24 June 2011, Mungate called for a public meeting at Jembere Business Centre where he told the villagers that he was the new police boss in the area and was a Zanu PF member and does not recognise the councillor. After Councillor Magunda challenged the police officer over his statements, Mungate threatened the councillor with arrest.

Since 2 July, the councillor is receiving knocks at his house during the night from unknown people. In the morning there were fliers strewn all over his homestead with the message; “Uchatama chete”.
