The Labour Court has ruled that 15 MDC supporters who were fired in 2008 at Shamva Gold Mine and imprisoned for six months should be reinstated. When they were released from prison in December 2008 the accused, who had kept management informed of their circumstances, returned to the mine but were advised that they had been dismissed. However, the Labour Court ruled that they should be re-instated as it could not be disputed that there was political violence in the area and some people’s houses were burnt and lives were threatened.

Hundreds of MDC supporters in Muzarabani North and South on Saturday held a peaceful demonstration against the inaction of the police in bringing the perpetrators of political violence to book. Although the police had banned the demonstration, the MDC supporters went ahead with the demonstration at Muzarabani growth point. Over 500 MDC supporters were murdered in 2008 while thousands were injured and some had their property and livestock looted.

Meanwhile, the MDC Chitungwiza province on Sunday held peaceful elections to elect a new provincial team as the party continues to galvanise all party structures across the country. The elections, held in the 2 000 seater-auditorium at the party headquarters at Harvest House, saw Zengeza East MP, renowned businessman and a holder of an MBA, Hon. Alexio Musundire being elected chairperson. Norton MP and veteran trade unionist, Hon. Edward Musumbu was elected deputy chairperson. Other members are; Chari Parirenyatwa (secretary) Kaniso Makarumu (organising secretary) and Llyod Damba (information and publicity secretary)

The new chairperson of the Women’s Assembly is Goromonzi ward 4 councillor, Martha Nhamburo, while the chairperson for the Youth Assembly is Albert Mashoko.
