The MDC national leadership led by President Morgan Tsvangirai today met with all the MDC mayors of Zimbabwe at the party’s headquarters, Harvest House to discuss issues affecting local councils and find a way forward.

The MDC is in control of all the urban councils expect Chitungwiza.

Addressing the mayors, President Tsvangirai said it was important for the mayors and their councillors to stick to the values of the MDC in order to improve service delivery to the residents.

President Tsvangirai was led by the national chairperson, Hon. Lovemore Moyo, secretary-general, Hon. Tendai Biti, treasurer-general, Hon. Roy Bennett, national organising secretary, Hon. Elias Mudzuri, his deputy, Hon. Morgen Komichi and the spokesperson, Hon. Nelson Chamisa.

Also present was the Local Government secretary, Hon. Sessel Zvidzai and his deputy, Last Maengahama.

Meanwhile, the MDC has called upon the inclusive government to urgently investigate the Local Government, Rural and Urban Development minister, Ignatius Chombo for abuse of office following his illegal suspension from office of seven MDC Harare councillors.

The MDC notes with concern that Chombo continues to unnecessarily interfere in the operations of the MDC – led councils across the country, having managed to foist losing Zanu PF local government candidates as “special councillors.”

Chombo’s suspensions of the Harare councillors come barely a month after he suspended another six MDC councillors in Rusape, including the chairperson.

MDC Vice President and Zimbabwe’s deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Thokozani Khupe has paid tribute to Murowa Diamond mine in Zvhishavane for the various community projects it was carrying out as part of its social responsibility.

Hon. Khupe said this when she toured clinics, schools and the establishment of factory shells by Murowa Diamond mine in partnership with the local community.

“We want companies to plough back to the communities they are operating in.  People need to identify themselves with the company.  Local people should be able to see the diamonds you are mining through various projects you would be doing for them,” Hon. Khupe said.

Hon. Khupe was accompanied by the deputy Minister of Mines and Mining, Hon. Gift Chimanikire and the mine’s managing director, Niels Kristensen.

Residents of Sizinda in Bulawayo have expressed gratitude to the Bulawayo City Council for carrying out a rehabilitation exercise in the city.

At a feedback meeting held at Sizinda Hall yesterday, the residents said they were happy with how the council had taken a rehabilitation exercise in the city.

Addressing more than 500 Sizinda residents, the MDC councillor for the area, Ruben Matengu said since the rehabilitation started at the beginning of the year, 90 percent of the work projected for had been completed.
