ROHR: Let’s play football in peace

ROHR Zimbabwe held a soccer tournament on Monday the 25th of May at Takwirira High School in Chisumbanje, Chipinge South Constituency.
Four resident community teams participated in the tournament which was organized to promote peace and cohesion among the youths from Chipinge South and Musikavanhu constituencies under the banner ‘You and I can make peace happen’ peace building project.

The tournament was officially opened by ROHR Zimbabwe’s Programs and Advocacy officer Innocent Madhuku. Madhuku urged the participating teams to carry the sportsmanship attitude and behavior portrayed by football fans when it comes to engagement in political activities. ‘At the end of every game there is a winner and a loser but fans from both teams get together shake hands, laugh, make reviews, share a drink, acknowledge the better performance of the day and promise each other that the next time the losing team will do better’’ said Madhuku.

The peace building project seeks to build capacities among community members through community training workshops on conflict management.
Since it was launched the project has received overwhelming support as many people identify with the current times in which the nation is trying to transition from a background dominated by violent conflict to a multi party democracy under the coalition government. The organization has received request from community members for specific projects that target capacitating of traditional leaders.

ROHR Zimbabwe is working in a consortium in partnership with Centre for Community Development in Zimbabwe (CCDZ), Catholic Commission for Peace and Justice in Zimbabwe (CCJPZ) and Victim Action Committee (VAC).
