Tererai discusses the just ended Diamond Conference at Vic Falls, with the deputy Minister for Mines Gift Chimanikire and Mike Davis, a campaigner for Global Witness which monitors the trade in so-called blood diamonds. Chimanikire admits that abuses by ZANU PF are responsible for problems in the industry, but they use “sanctions” as an excuse for the lack of accountability. Davis explains how the security chiefs control diamond mining, raising concerns that the revenue will be used to fund violence by ZANU PF during next year’s elections.
